What happened to January? How is it possible that March is just days away? So much has been accomplished over the past few weeks that I have neglected to sit down and capture those events.
When not actually "working" for someone else, I have been spending most of my time thinking, reading, and talking about how communities can use social media to connect. I know it's the "in" thing to do ... but I honestly don't see this as a "fad" only to disappear like the pet rock, but as a way to change how we communicate. I see social media as way to re-establish a sense of community and family that has often been broken as we get caught up in our busy, crazy lives.
Here is one example. Over the past couple of weeks I have connected with distant family members using Facebook. Some of these individuals I have never met, but we know how we are "connected". Others I haven't seen or spoken to in 25-30 years! We have reconnected, shared stories, shared pictures and reminded each other of the importance of family.
How has social media allowed you to re-connect to community?

Through Facebook I have also connected with past work associates. The plus is that I've learned where they currently toil (and they know where to find me). Most all will be great references, and because we know each other, it should be easier to move into a new phase of community.
Additionally, it seems that distances are less an issue in this new global community. Even if I am not able to utilize the services or products of a new connection, quite often I will interact with someone who can. How great is that! We pay it forward and connect our contacts and eventually our contacts reciprocate and we all win!!
